The Modern Art Council for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) has a wonderful tradition of selecting and honoring a local, community based artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. In years past, honorees include Robert Bechtle, Manuel Neri, Nathan Oliveira, Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Serra, Sara Little Turnbull, Lawrence Halprin, Ruth Bernhard, Larry Sultan, Bill Fontana, William Wiley, and last year’s Mark di Suvero.

This year’s award is granted to Jim Campbell ( for his lifetime achievement and groundbreaking work in new media, particularly for his use of technology as a means of visual expression. In Campbell’s case, he uses sound, light, and electronics to generate riveting sculptures.

Jim Campbell’s work, Exploded Views, commissioned by the SFMOMA is on exhibition now at the museum’s atrium through October 23, 2012. Don’t miss it.

The Modern Art Council (MAC) is SFMOMA’s premier fund-raising auxiliary since 1934, raising critical funds to support the museum’s mission as a leading institution of modern and contemporary art.
